“Almost ready, Alexander!” one of the Guardians selected for the journey to the Northlands announced as he finished preparing a few of the horses.

“Aye, same!” another one reported.

Alexander nodded. “Very good. Be ready to leave shortly. I will fetch Jacob in a bit.” He double-checked that all his weapons were packed and ready before inspecting his own horse. He had barely finished when he heard Elisa’s voice from behind.

“Take care. No doubt Moore will be waiting for us to move,” she cautioned as she approached.

Alexander chuckled. “Well then we had better hope we are not spotted.” He tilted his head. “Done celebrating already?”

The ex-Legionnaire shrugged. “Was never very fun at parties,” she admitted.

“You? Not fun at parties? I don’t believe it!” Diana emerged from her tent, a heavy sack slung over her shoulder.

Elisa exchanged amused glances with Alexander. “You are sure you don’t want me to accompany you?”

Alexander shook his head. “The Guardians need you here, Elisa. Prepare the others. They will need your help should the worst occur.”

Elisa nodded and watched as Diana fastened the last of the supplies to her horse. “As you wish. If there is nothing else, I am going to retire for the evening.”

“Of course. We shall see you soon,” the Guardian leader replied.

“Yes, good night, Elisa,” Diana added.

Elisa gave a final nod before walking across the Guardian campsite toward her tent. As she approached, she heard a faint sniffling and was surprised to see Andrea sitting on the dirt right outside of the tent. The enchanter had her arms around her knees, which were tucked up against herself. She looked up at the ex-Legionnaire. Even in the faint glow of the fire, Elisa could see that the enchanter’s eyes were bloodshot and that she had been crying.

“Oh, what in the world…what is it now?” she demanded.

Andrea scrambled to her feet. “I-I’m…sorry,” she stammered, brushing the dirt from her pants. “I was just…just–,”

Elisa was beyond caring. “I don’t really care anymore. The two of you need to figure things out or one of you needs to leave. I certainly don’t have time for it.” She tried to move past Andrea, but the enchanter grabbed her arm, stunning her momentarily.

“Let go,” she growled.

“You promised you’d help us. What are we doing here?” Andrea pressed as she tightened her grip on the older woman’s arm.

Elisa sighed. “We are doing what you agreed to do. Once we’ve united the houses you will be free to go to Rhyad, though why you would want to be anywhere near there is a mystery to me.” She shook her arm. “Now. Let go.”

The enchanter appeared as though she was about to protest, but she finally let go of Elisa’s arm. Annoyed, the ex-Legionnaire put her hands on her hips. “Look, girl. I don’t know what happened between the two of you and to be honest, I don’t care. You are free to leave whenever you want, but if you wish for my help then you’re going to have to toughen up a bit and deal with the situation we are in.
